Caringole White 2016

75cl Domaine la Croix Belle Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blabc France > Languedoc Juicy, easy drinking
The domaine produces a large range of wines, all estate-grown and bottled. “Caringole” are the entry wines, soft, easy-to-drink wines with the emphasis on ripe fruit flavours. No doubt that this is the best vintage we have ever tasted of this popular wine, based on Chardonnay lifted by zippy Sauvignon Blanc, a blend which makes perfect sense in the warm south. The scent just leaps out of the glass, all ripe melons and jasmine – and that same energy gives the wine surprising depth of flavour and length.

Jacques and Francoise Boyer took over this 17th century estate in 1977 with the goal of producing super-premium wine. The winery is based at Puissalicon, which is situated on a hill between the Cevennes mountains and the Mediterranean, north-east of Beziers and north-west of Pézenas.

On taking over the property, the Boyers began substituting the older varietals with more “prestigious” and diverse vines. Situated in the Cotes de Thongue, they set themselves a target of producing the regions finest wines. To achieve this, they produce all wines from a yield of 40hl/h, much lower than is normal in the zone. This is done to preserve the balance in the soil and the vines, to prevent the exhaustion of minerals and water and to produce healthy and flavour-rich grapes.
