A Pel Ancestral (Pet Nat) is a natural sparkling wine made with Xarel.lo grapes grown biodynamically by Josep at Bodegas Loxarel in Penedes. Pet Nat wines are made with only one fermentation in the bottle and are generally unfiltered, unfined and have a very gentle sparkle. In the case of this particular wine the ferment begins in clay amphora with the skins included and then finishes in the bottle.

Loxarel is an organic winery located an hour south west of Barcelona just outside Vilafranca del Penedes in the Penedes region. It is run with great enthusiasm and flair by Josep Mitjans and his wife Teresa. They make a range of wines, from native grapes to obscure grape varietials made in amphorae, some with skin contact, all natural, always organic and often biodynamic, including a range of the best Sparkling wines you'll ever taste.
Penédes is the birthplace of Cava and several local growers have left the Cava appellation as they believe the Classic Penédes wine is superior and unique, only grapes grown in the Penédes region are used in their sparkling wine.

Neal Martin in Wine Advocate: "Visiting the Masia Can Mayol estate of Loxarel was one of my most entertaining visits. Four generations of the Mitjans family have cared for their vines, presently managed either organically or biodynamically, as the horses roaming around the vineyard outside the window would testify. Director Josep Mitjans Buxens is as passionate as anyone I have encountered at a winery and he explained that his Cavas contain only natural sugar, no dosage and are mostly Xarello. They produce an interesting range of dry whites and reds, predominantly named after Greek gods and representing outstanding value."

Biodynamic agriculture guarantees respect for the environment, the diversity of the surroundings and includes a spiritual dimension in the relation between man and earth and earth and the universe; it involves a harmony with the universal forces to conserve fertility and the nutritive qualities of the grape grown on the estate in order to guarantee the best wines, sparkling wines and natural wines.
